The journey wasn’t easy. Newfoundland and Labrador had its own challenges, like limited facilities and resources for cricket. The small cricket community meant fewer chances to play competitive games and face strong opponents. I had to make the most of the limited resources and opportunities, which sharpened my ability to plan and perform under tough conditions,” he recalls.

Senthil Selvamani, a coach who played an important role in Rahul’s early years, remains a mentor and a significant influence. “Senthil’s guidance was priceless, and he continues to be a mentor to me,” Rahul says with gratitude. He also remembers Dave Liverman (late) and Gurman Khurana, whose guidance was crucial in helping him grow both on and off the field.

The Injury Setback

In the summer of 2018, Rahul faced one of the toughest challenges of his career—a serious knee injury that made him unsure about his future in cricket. The injury kept him off the field for most of the summer, and he couldn’t even walk, let alone play. But instead of giving up, Rahul saw this as a chance to learn. “It taught me patience, resilience, and the importance of staying strong mentally,” he says. With determination and hard work in rehab, Rahul made a strong comeback. In 2020, he led his team to an unbeaten season, scoring over 1,000 runs in 15 games, including six centuries in seven matches. This tough time made him even more determined and deepened his love for the game.
